What is Farm and Forest School

What is Farm and Forest School?

Our Early Childhood Program was created as an alternative to traditional classroom learning. Rather than sitting indoors being taught cookie-cutter subjects like math and science, children at Lewis Meadows are immersed in hands-on, real-life experiences that nurture a genuine love for themselves and the world around them. Through child-led discovery and creative-based learning, we encourage curiosity, imagination, and a deep connection to nature. Our approach empowers children to explore, discover, and grow at their own pace—where teachers guide, not direct.

Through a place-based learning environment, children connect deeply with the land, plants, and animals, encouraging holistic development across physical, social, emotional, and cognitive domains. We emphasize risk management and resilience, encouraging children to safely explore challenges, build problem-solving skills, and develop confidence. Plus, we embrace all weather conditions, teaching the value of experiencing nature in every season.

Testimonials

Families Share Their Stories

“We don’t experience natural environments enough to realize how restored they can make us feel, nor are we aware that studies also show they make us healthier, more creative, more empathetic, and more apt to engage with the world and each other. Nature it turns out is good for civilization.”

- Florence Williams

“The children and nature movement is fueled by this fundamental idea: the child in nature is an endangered species and the health of the children and the health of the Earth are inseparable.”

- Richard Louv
